What is the Championship Poker Association?

The Championship Poker Association was created to continue one man's dream to sponsor local poker players in major national tournaments. The CPA organizes and runs home games in a non-profit club like atmosphere with the intention of growing our skill level to be able to compete anywhere, against anyone on any level. And while this is the primary goal, the CPA serves a multi-functional role:
  • To serve as a poker clearinghouse, providing information and scheduling of upcoming safe, friendly tournaments
  • To provide a simulated experience designed to prepare our members for the numerous tournaments throughout the country.
  • To provide a safe friendly environment to sharpen our member's skill level and learn more about the game of poker.
  • As a means to satellite into smaller local tournaments.
  • To provide exposure to a range of games besides No-Limit Texas Hold'em. Pot limit Hold'em, Omaha, 7-Card Stud tournaments are run with several Association members having tournament experience in each area.
  • Most importantly, as a place to enjoy and practice poker with friends and colleagues.

Poker Options:

The Championship Poker Association provides many different game options. Typical buy-ins are between $20 and $60 for tournaments. However, monthly tournaments ranging between $100 and $200 are scheduled to generate a larger prize pool as well as a bi-annual mega event with a buy-in of up to $500.

We offer low level buy-in turbo games at least twice a month, a regular Thursday night game, and weekend action on a regular basis. During football season, we have a MNF league that plays during the game. Higher level buy-ins typically have blind structures similar to what you will see in a major Vegas tournament. Balancing play time (thru blind structures) to match buy-in levels makes the CPA a great place to play poker.

In addition to the many buy-in and structure options, we have a variety of locations from which to choose from. Association sponsored events are located in Detroit, Macomb Township, Sterling Heights, and Eastpointe. Association friendly games are run in Warren, Washington Township/Romeo, Eastpointe, Chesterfield, Richmond, Shelby and Sterling Heights.

While No limit Texas Hold'em may be the most popular game to play, the CPA feels that other poker formats can assist in the development of a player. As such, the CPA offers occasional Omaha and Omaha 8 tournaments, 7-card stud, H.O.R.S.E. tournaments. Additionally, No limit Hold'em bounty and re-buy tournaments are added to the schedule often.

Why is CPA Poker Better?

Championship Poker Club members have cashed in several major tournaments, netting over $40,000 in prize money. Additionally, CPA members can boast to having satellite their way into dozens of big ticket events. Local tournaments have also seen plenty of action from CPA members, including several tournament cashes and wins at Greektown and MotorCity Casinos, as well as final table cashes in Traverse City and appearances in the Heartland Poker Tour in the Upper Peninsula. The range of tournaments played in stretches from the Foxwoods Main Event to Los Angeles. Tunica, Aruba, and Atlantic City have all seen CPA members in action, as well as several trips to Las Vegas where our greatest successes have occurred. In addition to the multiple big tournament cashes in Vegas, our members typically enjoy a quantity of success in smaller tournaments due to the vast experience accumulated as members of the CPA. Several of the CPA biggest winners started out playing poker together. If you wish to learn poker, the CPA is a great place

Competition:

The level of competition shouldn't dissuade new players. Smaller buy-ins, turbo formats and the CPA poker school games are an excellent place to practice against more skilled opponents or learn new games like Omaha. Skilled players often utilize lower buy-in games to practice new styles of play, which helps to negate their experience advantage.

For those players who need the extra juice of competition, the player of the year point system as well as the MNF league system and the tournament of champions can offer extra motivation. And since these system reward the effort, no matter what place you finish you will receive points.

Even the most recognizable pro will tell you that the only real way to improve your game is the experience of play. More can be learned from playing against good opposition than bad. With the options the CPA has to offer, it's easy to see how much better your experience can be here.
